Stuart Friedman is an experienced appellate and post-conviction attorney whose practice focuses on the defense of individuals after trial. Mr. Friedman has handled literally hundreds of appeals both representing individuals wishing to overturn their criminal convictions and resisting prosecution appeals of defense wins in the trial court. Mr. Friedman also regularly drafts “friend of the court” briefs on behalf of numerous organizations including the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Families Against Mandatory Minimums, the Prison & Corrections Section of the State Bar, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Mr. Friedman is the author of the criminal section of the Michigan Appellate Handbook published by the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Mr. Friedman has litigated numerous important appellate cases in Michigan and in federal courts including cases such as obtaining a sentence reduction for over 10,000 inmates, a casino corruption case, defending against a prosecution challenge to the validity of the Miranda decision in the United States Supreme Court, and arguing the right of a woman to use lethal force to resist a rape. Mr. Friedman also participated in the drafting of the Michigan Court Rule which provided inmates with some due process protection against prosecution parole appeals, and Mr. Friedman obtained the release of the first 650 drug lifer under Michigan’s modification to its “650 drug lifer law.” Mr. Friedman is also a frequent speaker and writer on Michigan legal issues, including being the author of the definitive article on Michigan Post-Conviction Remedies. Mr. Friedman was honored for his volunteer work fighting Michigan’s drug laws by Families Against Mandatory Minimums in 2004.

Mr. Friedman belongs to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, American Immigration Lawyer’s Association, Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (Board of Directors, and former co-chair of the Publication Committee), the State Bar of Michigan Prison & Corrections Section (Past President and Council Member), State Bar of Michigan Appellate Practice Section (Board Member and Columnist), State Bar of Michigan Criminal Law Section, American Association of Legal Writers (Scribes), the State Bar of Michigan Administrative Law Section, the (Canadian) Criminal Defence Lawyers Association (associate member), and Cooley Law School Innocence Project (Volunteer Attorney).

Mr. Friedman is a graduate of Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan/Thomas M. Cooley Law School trial college in 2008. He has an Avvo 10 rating and was selected as a “Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers (West Publishing) since 2011 and received the prestigious "top 50" designation in 2015. He also received
DBBusiness Top Lawyer in Appeals recognition by Detroit Business Journal.
