Outlook Compatible E-mail Clients for Computers:
Microsoft’s e-mail protocol is largely limited to Microsoft based computing suites and platforms, e.g. Outlook and Entourage.
There are, however, two exceptions:
Apple Mail and iCal(endar) now sync with Microsoft Exchange Server; and,
Evolution, an open source e-mail platform for various platforms can sync with Microsoft Exchange Server. The Windows version still has some problems.
Outlook Compatible E-mail Clients for PDAs:
For PDAs, there are several choices:
The iPhone has licensed Active Sync technology. Starting with Version 2.0 of the iPhone software, iPhones sync natively to with Microsoft Exchange Server;
Symbian PDAs sync with Microsoft Exchange Server using Nokia’s Mail for Exchange program (free) or Dataviz’s pay program Roadsync.
Roadsync also works with the Palm OS and many Motorola phones.
Astrasync (formerly “Activeberry”) will convert a Blackberry from running Blackberry Individual/Enterprise Server to running Microsoft Exchange. Presumably the folks at RIM will not be happy about this program.
Remosync for Verizon. Verizon has recently launched a service called Remosync which adds Activesync (Microsoft Exchange) compatibility to a variety of PDAs and phones
